NEW INFORMATION Added 2/8/08:

I have learned more information about the proposed Rapid Ride transit:

  • King County Council will be meeting in May to review recommendations from the Rapid Ride team.

  • Over 1000 questionaires have been sent in.  If you want to submit a comment directly to Metro, the best option is Jack Lattemann as the project coordinator.

  • The proposed West Seattle Rapid Ride would replace the local 54 bus.

  • The two options for routing in the Junction under consideration are:

  1. Follow the current 54 local route from California, left on edmonds, right on 44, right on Alaska.  This would enable all other connections on the corner of Alaska/California.  The Rapid Ride bus would not travel on California between Edmonds and Alaska.
  2. Travel down Edmonds, turn right onto Alaska.  This would require a mid block stop with a station, bulb outs for the stop, and would likely be near the mid block cross walk (In front of Elliott Bay Brewery).
  • The requested safety study for the possible midblock station/stop on California is not complete yet.  This is looking at pedestrian safety, and the impact on the Walk All Ways intersection on California/Alaska.
  • The start of the route is still under consideration for either Westwood Village or the Fauntleroy Ferry dock.
  • The Rapid Ride schedule is likely to have a bus every 15 minutes until 10:30pm and then every 30 minutes from 10:30pm until 1am.  The route would begin in September 2011.

JuNO would like to make a recommendation to Metro . . . . please give us your input.  The West Seattle Junction Association (business association) is in favor of having Rapid Ride follow the existing 54 route and not come down California with a mid block stop.  I am pasting the letter they sent in the comments.

PLEASE submit comments either directly to erica@wsjuno or as a comment to this posting by February 15th.  Thank you.

One Response to “Rapid Ride”

    West Seattle Junction Association Letter:

I am pleased to provide the endorsement of the West Seattle Junction Association for the West Seattle RapidRide bus rapid transit service provided under King County’s Transit Now Ordinance. We are excited to welcome this new service to the Junction and we look forward the successful integration of this new service into the Junction business district.

The West Seattle Junction Association gives this endorsement provided that the West Seattle RapidRide follows the current Metro route 54 through the Junction. In the Southbound direction this route moves up SW Alaska St, onto 44th Ave SW, onto SW Edmunds St, onto to California Ave SW. It follows the same route, in reverse, in the Northbound direction. The West Seattle Junction Association does not support any changes to routing that would place West Seattle RapidRide buses, bus stations or bus “bulbs” on California Ave. SW between SW Edmunds St. and SW Oregon St. (due to potentially negative impacts on pedestrian safety and on-street parking).

The West Seattle Junction Association looks forward to working in partnership with the West Seattle RapidRide team in the years to come. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or Susan Melrose, Director of the West Seattle Junction Association, for any assistance.

    Sincerely,
    Dave Montoure
    President
West Seattle Junction Association, a City of Seattle BIA
