4706 California - Design Review Meeting, April 10th
A design review meeting has been schedule for April 10th, 6:30pm at Chief Sealth H.S.
This is for the building on California that Super Supplements, Barber Shop, Funky Janes, etc. are in. The proposed new design is described as:
Future construction of mixed use building: 12,000 sq ft retail at grade with 5 floors of residential apartments above totaling 60,500 sq ft on 2 below grade parking levels.
This is our opportunity to hear about the design, give feedback, and help shape our neighborhood!

I hope people will make a serious effort to attend this meeting. Connor Homes is planning a 6-story building and an 8-story building where Super Supplements and the Rocksport are now located. I spoke with people in Funky Jane’s, Rubato and the Rocksport recently; they are all terrified. A neighbor is a regular customer of Keith’s at the barbershop; he’s concerned too. We are about to lose some true West Seattle businesses to these developments. Do we really want more companies like Super Supplements taking over the Junction?
Here’s the big picture: there are currently at LEAST 13 new projects planned for the areas bounded by Cal Ave, Fauntleroy and Dakota (westseattleblog has a map with pinpoints on each location). We’re NOT just talking about one building here, and one there. This is an epidemic.
I wonder, why now? Are devleopers just trying to get a piece of the action while they still can, as the mortgage crisis gets worse and builders across the nation are going bankrupt? If these projects are built and never sold/rented, we’ll still be stuck with the buildings, blocking the sun and the sky, and looming over us, utterly and forever ruining the human scale that everyone loves so much about West Seattle.
And why here, when the center sction of the viaduct will be taken down in 2012? West Seattle simply is not close enough to downtown, considering our transportation issues (monorail? what monorail?) to warrant this kind of density.
Come to the meeting tonight and be part of the process. I’ve spoken to dozens of people in the Junction - business owners and residents - and not a single one of them is in favor of this. They also think there’s nothing we can do. Which is true, if we do nothing. Chief Sealth High Library, 6:30pm today, Thursday April 10th.
